ArmA2 BLUFOR Projects Westland Merlin HC3

Westland Merlin HC3

Merlin HC3

The Merlin HC3 is the UK's designation for the AgustaWestland EH101 (AW101 from June 2007). It is a medium-lift helicopter for military applications but also marketed for civil use. The helicopter was developed as a joint venture between Westland Aircraft in the UK and Agusta in Italy (now merged as AgustaWestland).

Merlin HC3

The Merlin is the first of a new generation of advanced, medium support helicopters for the RAF. It is an all weather, day and night, multi-role helicopter used in both tactical and strategic operational roles. The aircraft carries an impressive defensive-aids suite, which includes a Radar and Laser Warning Receiver, Missile Approach Warners and Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) equipment, all integrated with an automatic chaff and flare dispensing system. This is one of the most comprehensive defensive aids suites fitted to any helicopter in the world.

The Merlin is able to carry a diverse range of bulky cargo, either internally or under-slung. Cargo can include artillery, Land Rovers or light-strike vehicles and over five tonnes of freight. The spacious cabin can also accommodate up to 24 fully equipped combat troops and, when required, will convert to carry 16 stretchers for casualty evacuation or during humanitarian and disaster relief operations. Designed to operate away from base workshops and in difficult terrain, the Merlin has state-of-the-art support technology and incorporates aircraft health-and-usage diagnostics and a self-test capability for ease of maintenance.

Merlin HC3A

Due to a short fall of Medium Lift capability within the RAF and UK military in recent years the UK MoD issued an Urgent Operational Requirement for new helicopters to fill the capability gap. Unfortunately the production lines at Westland’s were fully booked and could not fast track more UK spec Merlins. The MoD then began to approach other Merlin operators to see if they could “buy” or trade for their new machines. In 2007 the British Ministry of Defence acquired the six troop transport Merlins to alleviate a shortfall in British operational helicopters. In exchange the British have ordered six new-build helicopters from AgustaWestland as replacements for the Royal Danish Air Force.
The MK512 differs form the standard HC3 spec in a few minor ways. It has different engines. A different cockpit layout and various sensors that are of a high spec than is fitted as standard to the HC3.

The MK512s, now designated HC3 are being converted to conform with UK requirements, eg comms kit and countermeasures etc and will begin operation flying in early 2008 with 78 Squadron flying form RAF Benson.

Merlins for ArmA2

Stage 1: RAF Versions

  • HC.3 - Unarmed
  • HC.3 - 2x GPMG
  • HC.3A - Unarmed
  • HC.3A - 2x GPMG

All the versions will have a certain dusty sheen to the final textures. It seems that after a few months in Iraq no matter how often they are cleaned they still retain the sand blasted finish
Stage 2: International Versions

  • EH-101 CSAR – Generic Gray and Roundel compatible
  • MK516 CSAR – Portuguese Colours
NOTE: Danish spec Mk512 has been deleted because of Frandsen/RavenDK/Cougar's repeated underhand attempts to bribe our team members and Beta testers using other people's private Betas to gain access to our addons prior to release.

The Feature set will include:

  • Dynamic Rotor System (DRS)
  • Integrated Chaff & Flares
  • Cargo System Support
  • Radar Warning System (FCSS Required)
  • Nose mounted FLIR camera with Laser Designator (game play purposes)
  • Auto/Manual Landing gear toggle
  • Auto/Manual Doors toggle
  • Flight Model Switching* - Switches between "Realistic" and "I'm a whiney baby that cant be arsed to learn to fly" mode. (Yes that is what its called! And it does come up on a display and is shown in the cargo cabin on the forward bulkhead)
  • Fully Instrumented cockpit and warnings
  • Dynamic Damage and Warnings
  • Cockpit System Audio Warnings
  • Switchable Copilot Position* - Allows the copilot to take control of the aircraft and vice versa.

NOTE* All features marked thus are still in development and may change.
Images shown are WIP textures and do NOT represent the final article.

Looking good guys, as a regular (Arma 2) Puma pilot, I'm looking forward to seeing your handiwork on the Merlin.

One question: Are you planning to make a variant that can take more than 1 downed soldier on board? Being able to evac up to 2 sections would be a very good thing.

Keep up the good work.... can't wait to see it (but going to have to)

Im not entriely sure what you are asking for? Do you want a medivac version?

The standard troop carrying version we have atm carries 20 seated, 3 gunners, a pilot and copilot. We have plans for other versions too that include special features but not a medivac option.
