Westland Lynx HMA.8

There are two Naval Lynx versions currently serving with the Royal Navy:

  • Lynx HAS.3 - We’ll cover this in a later update.
  • HMA.8 (CMP).

The ”H” means helicopter, obviously. The “MA” means Maritime Attack. The “8” is the model number and the “CMP” stands for Combined Mods Programme. You see the HMA.8 is the evolution of the first Royal Navy HAS.2 which first saw service in the early ‘70s. Throughout its life it’s received several upgrades making it a more flexible platform. It’s also evolved to cope with the changing world. In its first incarnation the Lynx HAS.2 was designed to fly from medium size Frigates and hunt for Submarines with dipping sonar, torpedoes and depth charges. Lately as the worlds naval threats have reduced the Lynx has been upgraded to change with the times; Taking on a drugs interdiction role and anti terrorism/piracy missions.

The HMA 8 Lynx carries a suite of sophisticated sensors including a 360° search radar which is used to guide Sea Skua anti-ship missiles. A Forward-Looking InfraRed (FLIR) pod is gimble-mounted atop the HMA 8's chin, above the radar. When hunting submarines, the HMA8 can lower a AN/AQS-18 dipping sonar beneath the water's surface or deploy a Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD).

The ArmA version sports a powerful FLIR Camera simulating the SeaOwl system on the real thing. We’re hoping to make 3 main versions of the HMA.8:

  • M3M .50Cal version as shown
  • 4x Sea Skua Version
  • 2x Depth Charge/Torpedo* Version

Of course all the usual helicopter features will be present too.

  • Dynamic Rotor System
  • Cargo System Support
  • Integrated Chaff and Flare System
  • Radar Warning Receiver (FCSS Required)
